About the Canal Variation

The Canal Variation departs from the Pseudo-Tarrasch with 5...Qb6, declining to recapture on d5 at once. With the queen gone from d8, the f6-knight is no longer pinned. From b6 the queen eyes b2, left unguarded by the bishop's trip to g5, and adds to the pressure that the c5 pawn exerts on d4. For the moment White is a pawn up with doubled d-pawns, and the play is more forcing than after the usual 5...exd5.
