Train it in TheoriaAbout the Koomen Variation
The Koomen Variation is a branch of the Noteboom Variation, arising after 4...dxc4 5. e3 b5 6. a4 Bb4. Here 7. Bd2 unpins the c3-knight, while 7...Qe7 keeps the b4-bishop defended along the diagonal. Black holds an extra pawn on c4, backed by the c6 and b5 pawns, although the c-pawns are doubled. White, a pawn down, aims to undermine this chain with the a-pawn and to use the open central files.
