A quiet Queen's Gambit Declined line reached via the Slav, in which Black answers White's modest Nbd2 and Bd3 setup by pushing the c-pawn on to c5.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Semmering Variation
The Semmering Variation arises from a Slav move order, 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. e3 e6. Here White avoids the Semi-Slav by choosing 5. Nbd2 instead of Nc3. After 5...Nbd7 6. Bd3 Black strikes with 6...c5, spending a second tempo on the c-pawn because the d2-knight puts little pressure on d5. The play is quiet and positional, and the central tension between the c- and d-pawns remains unresolved.
