Train it in TheoriaAbout the Stoltz Variation
The Stoltz Variation belongs to the fianchetto main line of the Tarrasch Defense. Here it is reached by the 3. Nf3 move order, with White's queen's knight delayed until move 8. After 9. Bg5 Be6 10. Rc1, Black plays 10...b6 to support the c5-pawn. If White exchanges with dxc5, Black can recapture with the b-pawn and keep a c5–d5 pair rather than an isolated d-pawn. White's pressure comes from the g2-bishop against d5 and from the rook on the c-file.
