About the Uhlmann Variation

The Uhlmann Variation is a branch of the Orthodox complex of the Queen's Gambit Declined. Here it is reached through the 3...Be7 move order, after 5. Bg5 h6 6. Bh4 O-O 7. Rc1 dxc4. Black does not wait for White to commit the f1-bishop to d3. Instead, Black answers the useful rook move by capturing on c4 at once. The extra pawn is normally temporary, and Black uses the time White spends regaining it to prepare a freeing break such as ...c5.
