About the Averbakh Variation

The Averbakh Variation is a branch of the Spassky System, 4. e3, in which both sides develop calmly with 4...Bb7 5. Bd3 c5 6. O-O Be7 7. b3 O-O 8. Bb2, placing each queen's bishop on the long diagonal. Black then releases the central tension with 8...cxd4, and after 9. Nxd4 White's c4- and e3-pawns face Black's e6-pawn. The c- and d-files are half-open, and the resulting game is a slow contest of piece maneuvering rather than early confrontation.
