A less common Black option in the Queen's Indian Classical Variation: 7...Na6 develops the queen's knight to the rim instead of occupying e4.

About the Tiviakov Defense

The Tiviakov Defense arises when Black meets the Traditional Variation's 7. Nc3 with 7...Na6 instead of the usual 7...Ne4. Black does not plant a knight on e4 and so avoids the simplifying sequence 8. Qc2 Nxc3 9. Qxc3. The queen's knight goes to the edge of the board, and the minor pieces stay on for longer. The bishops still face each other on the long diagonal, and both sides have castled kingside. It is a seldom-played sideline next to the main 7...Ne4.
