About the Modern Line

The Modern Line is Black's alternative to the retreat 6...Be7, the Intermezzo Line, after 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 b6 4. g3 Ba6 5. b3 Bb4+ 6. Bd2. With 6...Qe7 Black leaves the bishop on b4, where the queen now protects it. The tension with White's bishop on d2 remains, and White must decide whether and when to resolve it. Meanwhile the bishop on a6 keeps its pressure on c4.
