The Barry Attack arises after 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Bf4. White uses the flexible move order noted for 2...g6: c4 is still unplayed, which keeps the game out of the Grünfeld and King's Indian. Once Black commits to ...d5, White develops the queen's knight in front of the c-pawn and posts the dark-squared bishop on f4, outside the pawn chain. With no c4 to strike at, Black's usual counterplay against d4 has to come from ...c5 or piece pressure instead. Wikipedia lists it among the common Queen's Pawn Game systems.
Black nearly always completes the fianchetto with 4...Bg7. The Tarzan Attack, 5. Qd2, lines up queen and bishop on the c1-h6 diagonal and prepares long castling. The Grünfeld Variation, 5. e3 O-O 6. Be2, is a quieter setup with short castling and a central buildup. Less common are 4...c6, reinforcing d5, and 4...a6. Engines rate the position as balanced, and results on Lichess are close to even, with White slightly ahead.
