About the Traditional Colle

The Traditional Colle is the original form of the Colle System. In this line it is reached through the Indian move order 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 e6 3. e3 c5 4. Bd3 d5 5. c3. With 5. c3, White completes the c3-d4-e3 pawn triangle. Black's ...c5 therefore meets a supported d4-pawn, and an exchange on d4 does not open lines to White's disadvantage. White's usual follow-up is Nbd2 and O-O, and then the e3-e4 advance, after which the d3-bishop bears on the kingside. The c1-bishop stays behind its pawns for the time being. Black has set up the familiar ...e6, ...c5, ...d5 structure, but since White has not played c4 there is no immediate tension against d5.

Black's most frequent reply is 5...Nc6, which adds pressure to d4 and keeps the position flexible. The second choice, 5...c4, hits the bishop and gains queenside space. It also releases the pressure on d4, which makes e3-e4 easier to prepare, and White scores best against it. 5...cxd4 settles the central tension at once. The engine rates the position as level and prefers the quieter developing moves 5...Nbd7, 5...b6 and 5...Be7. On Lichess, White scores better than Black and draws are rare.
