About the Stonewall Attack

The Stonewall Attack is the Queen's Pawn Game with 2. e3 and 3. Bd3. White usually follows with f4, c3, Nd2 and Ngf3, building the c3-d4-e3-f4 chain. The bishop on d3 points at h7, a knight can settle on e5, and the plan is often a kingside attack with the queen and the f-rook joining in. The cost is structural. The c1-bishop is shut in behind its own pawns, and the e4-square becomes a permanent hole that Black can occupy with a knight.

Because White has not yet committed to f4, Black can choose a setup that makes the formation less attractive. The most common reply is 3...e6, a quiet setup after which White scores well. 3...Nc6 eyes the e5- and b4-squares, while 3...Bg4 develops the light-squared bishop actively before it is locked in, and Black scores slightly better than White after it. Engines rate the position as roughly balanced and favor 3...c5, 3...g6 or 3...Nc6. The opening is mostly seen at club level, where its fixed plan suits players who prefer to rely on a setup rather than on memorized theory.
