The Penguin Variation is an offbeat answer to the Advance Variation of the Réti Opening, 2...d4, in which White plays 3. Rg1. The rook move develops nothing and permanently gives up the right to castle kingside. It also leaves alone the d4-pawn that takes c3 and e3 from White's minor pieces, instead of challenging it with e3 or b4. Black can then support the pawn with ...c5 or ...Nc6.
