Train it in TheoriaAbout the Cordel Variation
The Cordel Variation branches from the Rio de Janeiro Variation (5...Be7) with 6. Qe2 Nd6 7. Bxc6 bxc6 8. dxe5 Nf5. The 19th-century treatment was 8...Nb7 followed by 9. Nc3 O-O. Here Black instead places the knight actively on f5, eyeing d4. White holds an advanced e5-pawn and extra space. Black has doubled c-pawns and an isolated a-pawn, offset by the bishop pair and a half-open b-file.
