A rare Berlin Defense sideline in which Black answers 7. dxe5 with 7...Ne4, avoiding the usual 7...Nf5 route into the Berlin Wall endgame.

About the Westerinen Line

The Westerinen Line diverges from the main l'Hermet Variation at Black's seventh move. After 6. Bxc6 dxc6 7. dxe5, the knight goes to the central e4 square rather than f5, the far more common retreat that usually leads to the Berlin Wall endgame after 8. Qxd8+ Kxd8. The pawn structure is the familiar one: White has a pawn on e5 and Black has doubled c-pawns, with the d-file fully open. Material is level, and the line is seldom seen.
