About the Minckwitz Variation

The Minckwitz Variation arises from the Rio de Janeiro line of the Berlin Defense, 5...Be7, when White plays 6. dxe5 rather than the traditional 6. Qe2. The capture regains the pawn immediately and plants a pawn on e5, with the d- and e-files half-open and Black's knight still on e4. Black, already prepared to castle, is to move. It is one of the less frequently reached positions among named openings.
