Train it in TheoriaAbout the Pillsbury Variation
The Pillsbury Variation branches from the Rio de Janeiro Variation (5...Be7) of the Berlin Defense. After 6. Qe2 Nd6 7. Bxc6 bxc6 8. dxe5 Nb7, White plays 9. b3 rather than the 19th-century 9. Nc3. Black's knight stands passively on b7 and the c-pawns are doubled. White keeps an advanced pawn on e5, and the b-, d- and e-files are half-open.
