The Basque Gambit is a sideline of the Center Attack in the Ruy Lopez, also known as the Spanish Game. After 6...exd4, White plays 7. e5 to drive the knight to e4, then allows 8. c3 dxc3 and a second pawn to fall. Black is two pawns up but has doubled c-pawns. White seeks compensation in the advanced e5 pawn, the half-open c-, d- and e-files, and quicker piece activity. The line is uncommon.
