The Panov System is the branch of the Chigorin Defense in which Black releases the central tension immediately with 12...cxd4, and White recaptures 13. cxd4. The exchange opens the c-file, on which Black's queen already stands at c7, and fixes White's pawns on d4 and e4 against Black's on d6 and e5. Play then centers on control of the open file and on the remaining tension between d4 and e5. The line is classified under ECO code C99.
