The Yugoslav System is a branch of the Chigorin Variation of the Closed Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Game, classified as ECO C97. After 11. d4 Qc7 12. Nbd2 Bd7 13. Nf1 Rfe8 14. Ne3 g6, Black takes the f5 square from White's knight and adds a rook to the defense of e5. The play is slow and built on maneuvering, with Black's queenside expansion set against White's central presence.
