A Modern Steinitz line of the Ruy Lopez in which Black retreats the bishop with 9...Be8, holding e5 with a compact, defensive setup.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Kecskemet Variation
The Kecskemet Variation comes from the Modern Steinitz move order, 4...d6, rather than 4...Nf6, and Black later adds ...Nf6, ...Be7 and ...O-O. The pawn on d6 defends e5 for good, and 5...Bd7 breaks the pin on the c6-knight. After 9. Re1 Black plays 9...Be8, moving the bishop back to free d7 for a knight. The result is a closed center, with White's pawns on d4 and e4 facing Black's on d6 and e5.
