A rare Closed Ruy Lopez line in which Black, with the center locked and the king still uncastled, expands on the kingside with 13...g5.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Leonhardt Variation
The Leonhardt Variation comes from the old-fashioned 8...Na5 branch of the Closed Ruy Lopez, in which Black postpones castling. After 9. Bc2 c5 10. d4 Qc7 11. h3 Nc6 12. d5 Nb8 the center is blocked, with White's pawn on d5 facing Black's chain on c5, d6 and e5. Black then uses the uncastled king to play 13...g5, gaining kingside space and taking the f4 and h4 squares away from White's pieces.
