A sideline of the Closed Ruy Lopez in which White retreats the bishop to c2 at move nine instead of preparing d4 with the customary 9. h3.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Lutikov Variation
The Lutikov Variation, 9. Bc2, is one of White's ninth-move alternatives to 9. h3 in the Closed Ruy Lopez. The bishop withdraws at once to c2, out of reach of a later ...Na5 while still eyeing the kingside along the b1–h7 diagonal. Because h3 has been skipped, Black keeps the option of ...Bg4 pinning the f3-knight, the resource that the usual preparatory move is meant to rule out before White plays d4.
