About the Re3 Variation

The Re3 Variation of the Marshall Attack (ECO C89) departs from the Main Line with 12. Bxd5, eliminating Black's centralized knight. After 12...cxd5 13. d4 Bd6 14. Re3, White remains a pawn up, and the rook on the third rank can shift sideways to help guard the kingside. Black's d5-pawn is isolated. In return Black keeps both bishops in an open position, and three queenside pawns hold back White's four.
