The Tartakower Variation, 6. Qe2, is a sideline of the Open Defense of the Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Game. In place of the main line 6. d4, White moves the queen onto the e-file. There it attacks the knight on e4 and bears down on the black king, which has not yet castled. The aim is to regain the pawn without surrendering the bishop pair, as White does in 6. Bxc6.
