A rare Ruy Lopez line in which White answers Black's early ...b5 and ...Be7 with 7. a4, attacking the queenside pawn chain at once.

About the Wing Attack

The Wing Attack is a seldom-seen branch of the Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Game. After Black has played both ...b5 and ...Be7, White strikes at the b5-pawn with 7. a4 and tries to open the a-file. Black's most common reply is 7...Bb7. The advance 7...b4 has given Black good results, and 7...Rb8 is a third option that keeps the pawn protected. Engines rate the position as roughly balanced.
