The Luther Line arises when Black answers the Bernstein Variation's 9. Nbd2 with 9...Bc5. This bishop move, the main reply to 9. c3, aims at f2. Instead of exchanging on e4 with 10. Nxe4, White plays 10. Qe1, which protects f2 and lines up a second attacker against the e4-knight along the e-file. The line remains a seldom-explored offshoot of the Open Spanish.
