About the Harksen Gambit

The Harksen Gambit replaces the standard 8. dxe5 of the Open Ruy Lopez with 8. c4, giving up the c-pawn instead of winning back the pawn on e4. If 8...dxc4, then 9. Bc2 hits the e4-knight, which has lost its d5 support; after 8...bxc4, 9. Ba4 puts the bishop back on the a4-e8 diagonal and pins the c6-knight. The gambit is extremely rare in practice.
