Train it in TheoriaAbout the Malkin Variation
The Malkin Variation belongs to the Classical line of the Open Ruy Lopez, or Open Spanish, and arises after 9. c3 Be7 10. Nbd2 O-O. The standard continuation is 11. Bc2, which lines up the bishop against the knight on e4 and is often met by 11...f5. Here White plays 11. Qe2 instead. The queen goes to the e-file, where it bears on the e4-knight and helps support the advanced e5 pawn.
