A sideline of the Open Ruy Lopez in which White meets 6...b5 with 7. d5, abandoning the a4-bishop to hit the c6-knight; it is poorly regarded.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Richter Variation
The Richter Variation replaces the usual 7. Bb3 with 7. d5. White leaves the a4-bishop en prise and counterattacks the c6-knight instead. The usual course is 7...bxa4 8. dxc6 d6 9. c4 Be7, after which 10. Qxa4 regains a pawn. Black keeps the bishop pair and a stable center, and the line is not well regarded. After 7...Ne7 8. Re1, the natural 8...Nc5? runs into 9. Nxe5, when 9...bxa4?? loses to 10. Qf3.
