About the Tarrasch Trap

The Tarrasch Trap arises in the Classical line of the Open Variation after 9. c3 Be7 10. Re1 O-O 11. Nd4. The rook move was once common but is rare today. The natural 11...Qd7 is a blunder. White wins a piece with 12. Nxe6 fxe6 13. Rxe4, since 13...dxe4 runs into 14. Bxe6+, forking king and queen. The correct reply is 11...Nxe5. A separate trap in the Steinitz Defense carries the same name.
