About the Kostić Defense

The Kostić Defense is a restrained branch of the Dyckhoff Variation of the Schliemann Defense. After 4. Nc3 fxe4 5. Nxe4, Black avoids both the sharp 5...d5, which runs into the heavily analyzed 6. Nxe5, and the Tartakower Variation 5...Nf6, and instead develops the king's bishop with 5...Be7. Material is level. Black keeps a lone central pawn on e5, the f-file is half-open for Black's rook, and the e-file is half-open for White.
