About the Tartakower Variation

The Tartakower Variation of the Schliemann Defense meets the centralized e4-knight with 5...Nf6 instead of the sharper 5...d5, offering a knight trade. The most common reply, 6. Nxf6+, is answered comfortably by 6...Qxf6. With 6. Qe2, White first puts pressure on e5. After 6...d5 7. Nxf6+, the queen recapture loses a pawn to 8. Qxe5+, so Black must accept 7...gxf6. Engines give White a slight edge, yet Black scores well in practice.
