The Hanneken Variation is a branch of the Scotch Gambit in which Black answers 4. Bc4 with 4...Bb4+, the London Defense, and accepts every pawn offered. After 5. c3 dxc3 6. O-O cxb2 7. Bxb2, White is two pawns down but leads in development. The continuation 8. Ng5 O-O 9. e5 Nxe5 gives up a third pawn, opening the e-file and the long diagonal toward the castled black king.
