A rare branch of the Classical Scotch in which White retreats 7. Nc2, guarding e3 rather than developing the f1-bishop; the position is roughly balanced.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Meitner Variation
The Meitner Variation is 7. Nc2 in the traditional Classical Scotch line 4...Bc5 5. Be3 Qf6 6. c3 Nge7, an alternative to 7. Bc4, 7. g3, 7. Qd2 and 7. Bb5. The knight leaves d4, where the bishop and queen bear on it, and covers e3, so the usual 7...Bxe3 is met by a knight recapture that leaves White's pawns undamaged. 7...Bb6 is the main alternative. The engine rates the position as roughly balanced, and the line is rarely played.
