About the Gunsberg Defense

The Gunsberg Defense arises in the traditional treatment of the Classical Scotch, 4...Bc5 5. Be3 Qf6 6. c3 Nge7, after White adds pressure to c6 with 7. Bb5. Black responds with 7...Nd8, withdrawing the knight rather than allowing an exchange on c6 that would leave doubled queenside pawns. The knight can later be redeployed via e6, but Black's position is congested for the moment, with the queen already committed to f6 and White's pieces actively placed.
