Sicilian Dragon line in which White meets ...Bc4 with 12. Bd3 in the Maróczy Line, offering a trade of light-squared bishops while keeping the f5 wedge.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Spielmann Variation
The Spielmann Variation is a White choice on move 12 in the Maróczy Line of the Classical Dragon, reached here through an Accelerated Dragon move order. After 10...Na5 11. f5 Bc4, the bishop on e2 is attacked, and White answers with 12. Bd3. This offers a trade of light-squared bishops while keeping e4 protected and the f5 pawn in place. Black's principled reply is 12...Bxd3 13. cxd3 d5, the Bernard Defense, which uses a central break to counter White's kingside space.
