A rare Sicilian sideline in which Black answers 3. d4 with 3...a6, delaying the capture on d4 and leaving White several ways to exploit the tempo.

About the Drazic Variation

The Drazic Variation arises when Black, after 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4, declines the customary 3...cxd4 and plays 3...a6 instead. The move is the familiar Kan-style ...a6, controlling b5 and preparing queenside expansion, but here it comes before the pawn trade. That leaves White's two-pawn center intact and lets White choose how to treat the c5-pawn. It counts as a very minor sideline of the Open Sicilian with 2...e6, and the engine gives White a modest edge.

The most frequent and engine-preferred reply is 4. d5, which gains space and cramps Black, who must decide whether to undermine the advanced pawn or allow it to stay. 4. dxc5 is next in popularity. It opens the position and forces Black to spend time regaining the pawn, and Black actually scores slightly better than White after it in online play. 4. Nc3 simply develops, keeping the option of recapturing on d4 with the knight if Black takes. That option may steer the game toward familiar ...e6 Sicilian structures. Overall results in the Lichess database are almost evenly split.
