Train it in TheoriaAbout the Flohr Variation
The Flohr Variation arises when Black meets 4. Nxd4 in the 2...Nc6 Sicilian with 4...Qc7 instead of the usual 4...Nf6, 4...e5 or 4...g6. The queen covers e5 and the c-file and keeps Black's kingside development open. Its main purpose is move-order flexibility. After the most common reply, 5. Nc3, Black generally continues 5...e6, which transposes to the Bastrikov line of the Taimanov, with a structure where the pawns sit on e6 and later d6 or a6 and the pieces stay fluid.
While 4...Nf6 attacks e4 and practically forces 5. Nc3, the Flohr leaves e4 unchallenged. That gives White more choice. The knight trade 5. Nxc6 is the second most frequent answer, and 5. Be3 also appears. The engine's leading suggestions include 5. c4, which grips d5 in Maróczy fashion, and the quiet 5. a3. The engine gives White a slight edge, but on Lichess the results are almost evenly split, with Black scoring marginally better. The line sees moderate use and is valued mainly as a route into Taimanov positions.
