A rare Sicilian sideline in which Black meets 3. d4 with 3...e6 instead of capturing, allowing White to gain space with d5; engines favor White.

About the Franco-Sicilian Variation

In the Franco-Sicilian Variation Black answers the Open Sicilian thrust 3. d4 with 3...e6 rather than the usual 3...cxd4. The name reflects the hybrid setup: a French-style pawn on e6 placed beside the Sicilian c-pawn. The idea is to support a later ...d5 and keep the tension in the center. The drawback is that White is not obliged to open the position on Black's terms. Both central pawns stay on d4 and e4, and the engine assigns White a large advantage.

The most common reply, 4. d5, is also the engine's first choice. It gains space with tempo against the c6-knight and cramps Black's queenside and center, and it gives White the best practical results. Roughly a fifth of games continue 4. dxc5, which yields far more balanced scores because Black can recover the pawn with active development. The quieter 4. Nc3 keeps options open and can steer play back toward Open Sicilian structures if Black later captures on d4. The line is an offbeat choice, seen mostly in online play rather than at a high level.
