Sicilian sideline in which Black meets 3. d4 with 3...f5, hitting e4 instead of exchanging on d4 and loosening the kingside in the process.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Frederico Variation
The Frederico Variation arises when Black, after 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 g6 3. d4, passes over the standard 3...cxd4 and plays 3...f5. This attacks the e4-pawn rather than trading on d4. The c5-pawn remains exposed to capture, and the pawns on g6 and f5 loosen the light squares around Black's king. Black accepts these structural risks in exchange for immediate pressure on White's center, which is typical of a deliberate sideline.
