Train it in TheoriaAbout the Gipslis Variation
The Gipslis Variation is a fianchetto treatment of the Modern Variation of the Kan. After 5. Bd3 Nf6 6. O-O d6 7. c4, White has set up a Maróczy-style bind with pawns on c4 and e4. Black replies 7...g6, preparing to develop the king's bishop on the long diagonal behind a compact d6–e6 pawn front. The line is named after the Latvian grandmaster Aivars Gipslis, who played it as Black several times in the 1960s. ECO classifies it as B42.
