Kan Variation, Maróczy Bind, Hedgehog Variation

After White adopts the Maróczy Bind with 5. c4, Black replies 5...g6 and prepares to fianchetto the king's bishop. On the long diagonal it bears on the dark squares around d4, consistent with the Kan scheme of light-square pawns and pieces covering the dark squares. The line is rarely played. The engine gives White a clear advantage, and White scores well in practice. By far the most common reply is 6. Nc3, which reinforces control of d5.
