About the Keres Variation

The Keres Variation, 2. Ne2, develops the king's knight to a square from which it can serve either of White's main Sicilian plans. It was a favorite of Paul Keres and shares its ideas with the Chameleon System, where the same setup arises via 2. Nc3 and 3. Ne2. The move is chiefly transpositional. White can continue 3. d4 and recapture on d4 with the knight for an Open Sicilian, opt for a Closed Sicilian with 3. g3 and Bg2, or play 3. Nbc3 and keep both plans in reserve. Because Black must show a setup first, White may steer the game into an Open Sicilian line other than the one Black usually prepares.

Black most often answers 2...Nc6, ahead of 2...d6 and 2...e6. These are standard Sicilian developing moves that leave transpositions open to both sides. The engine rates the position as balanced, and results are close to even, with a slight plus for White. The line is a minor sideline, seen far less often than 2. Nf3, 2. Nc3 or 2. c3, and offers a practical way to avoid heavy theory without committing early to a pawn structure.
