About the Mengarini Variation

The Mengarini Variation, 2. a3, is a cousin of the Wing Gambit (2. b4). Rather than offering the b-pawn at once, White first protects the b4-square so that a later b4 can challenge the c5-pawn and, after ...cxb4, be met by axb4 with material level. The goal resembles the gambit's: to divert Black's c-pawn from the fight for d4 and then build a broad center with d4. The cost is a tempo spent on a quiet rook-pawn move, which gives Black time to choose a setup before the queenside plan becomes a threat. Alexei Bezgodov devoted a 2004 monograph to the line.

The most common reply by a wide margin is 2...Nc6, which develops and adds control of d4. 2...e6 and 2...d6 are the main alternatives, keeping Black's structure flexible, and the engine also favors the fianchetto with 2...g6. The variation sees little serious use but appears regularly in online play. Results are close to even, with White doing slightly better against 2...Nc6, and the engine rates the position as roughly balanced.
