A pawn sacrifice in the 3...Nc6 Moscow Variation: White gives up the e4-pawn for rapid development and pressure on the half-open e-file.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Moscow Gambit
The Moscow Gambit arises from the 3...Nc6 branch. Here White does not retreat the bishop. Instead White plays 7. Bxc6 Bxc6 8. d4 and lets Black take the e-pawn with 8...Bxe4. After 9. Bg5, White is a pawn down but has castled and has a rook on the half-open e-file. The black bishop on e4 and Black's uncastled king sit on that file, and the f6-knight is pinned. White hopes the lead in development will justify the sacrifice.
