About the Goteborg Variation

The Goteborg Variation, also known as the Argentine Variation, answers 8. Qf3 with 8...h6 9. Bh4 g5, striking at the f4-pawn and the pinning bishop. It takes its name from the 1955 Goteborg Interzonal, where Panno, Pilnik and Najdorf all played it against Soviet opponents and lost after 10. fxg5 Nfd7 11. Nxe6 fxe6 12. Qh5+ Kf8 13. Bb5. Fischer's 13...Rh7 against Gligorić in 1958 revived it, and current theory holds that White can achieve no more than a draw.
