Train it in TheoriaAbout the Gurgenidze Variation
The Gurgenidze Variation arises when Black combines the kingside fianchetto with 5...e5, clamping down on d4 but leaving d5 and the d-pawn as long-term concerns. White replies 6. b4, offering the b-pawn to deflect the c5-pawn, undermine Black's control of d4 and open lines on the queenside. The line bears the name of the Georgian grandmaster Bukhuti Gurgenidze.
