A Richter-Rauzer sideline in which Black answers 7. Qd2 with 7...Qb6, using the queen to pressure White's d4-knight and queenside instead of developing.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Ivanov Variation
The Ivanov Variation is one of Black's less common answers to the Traditional 7. Qd2 in the Richter-Rauzer. Instead of developing with 7...Be7 or preparing ...Bd7 with 7...a6, Black plays 7...Qb6. From b6 the queen bears on the d4-knight and, along the open b-file, on the b2-pawn, which is left without a defender once the c1-bishop has gone to g5. This gives the queen an active role before Black has finished development.
