About the Wing Formation

With 3...Qa5, also called the Wing Variation, Black declines the Smith-Morra Gambit by pinning the c3-pawn against the king, so cxd4 is temporarily unavailable. White usually regains the pawn. 4. Qxd4 is the most common reply. 4. Nf3 Nc6 5. Nxd4 recovers it with development, while 4. Nf3 Nc6 5. b4 Qc7 6. b5 Ne5 7. Nxe5 Qxe5 8. Qxd4 first gains queenside time. The unpinning 4. Bd2 scores best for White, and the engine rates the position as roughly balanced.
