A Wing Gambit line where Black meets 3. a3 with ...d5 and ...e5 and answers 7. c4 with 7...Qe6, keeping the extra pawn and a firm hold on e5.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Romanian Defense
The Romanian Defense comes from the 3...d5 counterstrike, which is often considered Black's most reliable answer to the Marshall Variation. After 4. exd5 Qxd5, White chooses 5. Nf3 rather than the Marienbad's 5. Bb2, and Black stakes out the center with 5...e5. White then drives the queen with 7. c4, and 7...Qe6 keeps e5 protected while watching the e-file. Black stays a pawn up with doubled b-pawns, and White's a-pawn is isolated.
